Pincushion dilemmas

My name is Gina, and I have Creative Attention Deficit Dissorder.

After signing up to Kate's pincushion swap and getting my creative brief, I made up my mind to do some English paper piecing with tiny precious scraps.

And, according to plan, my Cookie Hexagons are coming along very nicely:

But then, last night, after a few hours of creative playing with gingham and coffee sacks (for an upcoming giveaway) I cobbled THIS together from my scraps:

Now, I love this pincushion. I love the textured hessian, I love the colours, I love the chunky feel (it's quilted as well as stuffed), and I love the text.

I also love that it's finished.

Do I:

a) Accept that I am prone to changing my design ideas mid-stream, rejoice that I've finished something, send it to my pincushion recipient, and stick the Cookie Hex on a skirt?
b) Persist with my original hexagon pincushion idea so that I feel like I have some ability to follow through, and keep this one for myself?!
c) Pretend that it was all part of the plan to make another pincushion for my upcoming 'blogversary' giveaway,  send it off to one of you guys, and get on with my Cookie Hex?

Over to you...

  1. I LOVE the new one and would be thrilled to bits to receive it. BUT, you do need to finish what you start (My Mum always said)...so back to the hexes you must go. If only to say you did it.Not sure how much help that actually is!

  2. Pah! Me telling you what to do would be a simple case involving a pot and a kettle. Except you have one and a half pincushions and I don't. And not to be a bad influence or nuffin', but those cookie hexes would be DREAMY on a skirt.

  3. Your the designer, go with what you like! I love the hexagon one but it isnt finished yet, and the new one is so cute too!

  4. Go the finished one- the hex one is obviously meant to for bigger and better things! I think like you said it will be a bit trickier, you'll be pretty proud when you pull it off! You new pincushion rocks!

  5. Oh the beauty and privilege of choice :) Whenever I can't decide between things I always try to remind myself how very lucky I am to have options at all... oh what a lovely problem to have ;) If it were me, I'd go with choice 1... but then choice 2 is very appealing... oh ok, do no. 3!! They are all great options Gina. Have fun deciding :) K

  6. Ack what a dilemma!
I'd have a really hard time giving away that very gorgeous finished pincushion.... but the hexs would look pretty fab on a skirt.

  7. No 1. The hexes obviously aren't taking your creative fancy or they would be done. Finish what you start also means start something new in my book. Things generally get used and if not they move on to something else. Not sure that makes any sense so I will say bye for now. lol Cherrie

  8. Number 2 fits the brief and is finished, send it off. Number one isn't finished for a reason and maybe that reason is that it is destined for other greatness. Loving them both though.

  9. Ummmmm too hard for Sunday ... all excellent options, but I vote for c - they are both worthy and beautiful pincushions! Nic

  10. wow Gina I LOVE LOVE LOVE your new one it is stunning and I don't think it should matter about CADD I think we all have that as it is part of the creative process, go with what you feel, either way the hexies are gorgeous and it is still "finished" even if you keep it and put it on a skirt (which would look fabulous by the way) xx

  11. They are both GORGEOUS!!
I suggest a little of column a and a little of column b. Rejoice that you have finished something, and keep going with the Cookie Hex. If you don't finish a hex cushion by swap time, send the finished one, and you can then decide whether to continue on with a cushion, or change the original purpose. If you DO finish the hex cushion, you will have a choice of cushions to send, and will then have to choose between b or c.
Whatever you decide, you should still be extrememly proud of what you have achieved!

  12. Oooo I just saw a hessian one very similar on maya made (which she is giving away) and thought I'd have a crack at making one too! Whilst I'd love your swap partner to receive it, I'd also love a chance to win it! Having said that the cookie hex would look AWESOME on a skirt... Help much?

  13. I love your new one and the shape is so unique. Also awesome you can hang it up. I say give that one to your partner and have the stress of deadlines be done with. You can always make your bellisima hexagon one as a gift in the future. xo m.

  14. Just got interrupted by the 5-yr old who has "tattooed" his face like a Maori man, with silver sparky pen. Going to be some fun scrubbing happening soon!

Back to pincushions. I keep thinking that the red hex looks like a brooch or something else - I think it would excellent on a skirt or top (like this one from Sew Liberated http://www.soulemama.com/soulemama/2010/03/sewliberated.html).
Your coffee sack pincushion is super cute - any swap partner would be happy to receive it. Then you can send it off and happily get onto the next project with no guilt.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your Sunday afternoon. E xxx

  16. Oh My Gina!! You know I applaud you for getting side tracked and still finishing what you set out to finish!! It would be different if you ended up with a whole heap of unfinished thingys...lol I say forget the hex if you're not felling it and put it on a skirt baby!! Woohoo!!

  18. Being sensible is boring. Sometimes unavoidable in order to be considered a grown up, but boring nonetheless. This is why we craft. A) cos the finished pin cushion is VERY nice and those hexes would look really really good on a skirt.

Love the blog - I ended up in the Warm Women scarf thing from here, so thanks!

    Cheers,
    AJ

... a really, excellent, world-class starter of stuff and not so much with the finishing.

  19. both fantastic, but I would love to be in your shoes and have a completed pincushion, rather than my effort of 3 completely different ideas at various stages of completion!!! (due to that similar distraction of the glory of a new project!)

  20. Definatley option A. Your pincushion is ultra cool (where did you get that button?) and the skirt or other 'wierd place for a hexagon to turn up' idea sounds great too. Go with the flow, life changes, take it as it comes!

    ReplyDelete
  21. well..you know which one I'd like!
keep working on the hexagons, maybe it's just not meant to be a pincushion.
that cafe one though..hmmm, I like

  22. You need to give yourself permission to be a creative designer.

Your design started out as one thing, but evolved into something else. That is a good thing. It doesn't mean that the start is wasted; use it for something else.

Enjoy the creativity, rejoice that you did complete something, send it off and be glad! There were no restrictions on the type of design/size/color/ shape, etc., so let yourself off the hook! Great job!

  23. I'd go for option d - keep it yourself - because it's really nice and even more excellent that you like it so much, and you can never have too many pincushions. You could always make another one for your giveaway....?

  24. OH definitely - absolutely NO question - beyond reasonable doubt

    C and C!!!! (PICK MEEeeeeee)

    P.S. Nice to see the japanese circle/squares again : o )

  25. I've got a bit of a crush on hessian at the moment (like so many others!) so my vote is for the 2nd pincushion. I enjoy the flow of crafting when I'm lead astray by a project (knowing full well I 'should' be doing something else)....even better if I finish it!

Now I need to get back to that pincushioning myself.

  26. aah, the creative process is a tangled path - who are we to argue with the great big wonderful thing we find at the end of it!

    ReplyDelete
  27. a dilemma indeed ... I suppose the question is: can you part with the hexagons or would they be better served on a skirt for you???

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think send along the pincushion! (It's gorgeous btw!) That's the best part about the creative process, it ca change a project so much from start to finish! :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. want it very much!!! - so option C it has to be...(and then you have to send it to me!!!)

  30. thank you for commenting about my shoes. they're verry comfortable.

hmmm. I pulled some burlap out of the garbage at the grocery store with no idea for what, but I am a packrat, I mean a collector.
Now I know what I can do with some of it. Do you mind?
