My creative space...

Today in my space, I'm doing some more free-motion embroidery, or more appropriately, thread sketching*...

I'm trying to figure out (after the comments on my last post) how best to translate this process into a 'how-to'...

Because everyone who says 'I could never do that' actually has the tools, they just need a little push and shove, a little encouragement, a little knowledge... and a willingness to think outside the square.
I'll be back later when I've figured out the best way to give that push and shove.
Meanwhile, why don't you pop over to Kirsty's place and check out what's happening in other creative spaces today?

*Thread sketching... darn it, I thought I'd made the term up but then I googled it to check and of course someone else had thought of it waaaaay before me...

  5. i do so love your little birdy.
thread sketching is a great word - sometimes even though someone else says the term first it is still a collective consciousness that makes it come to. it seems every word or term or name i think of someone already has thought of - talented bunch of so-and-so's!!!
please please do give us the little push to feel that we can free motion like you do, i'm very scared and have only tried a couple times. i hear its practice that makes it work the best.
    enjoy your day.

  6. Thread sketching. I like that term.

I have actually done some myself a while back before I had a blog. I'll send you some pics if you like??

Your bird is so sweet. I love the way the lines give it so much shape and movement. Do you sketch a basic outline on your fabric with fabric chalk/pencil first?

  8. Ooo now this is fabulous... creative activity and promises of tutorials :) Can't wait. I'm sure I could do it but I just need to be prompted about what to do with my machine. All this release the foot stuff that people go on about means absolutely ziltch to me. Good luck! K

  10. I love it, your birdie is beautiful (so was the one on the smock... didn't quite get around to commenting there). I've been wanting to give this a bit of a try, all I need is time and to get over feeling like it will be difficult!

  16. I was given a book on threadsketching a million years ago and wasn't convinced by their examples - very fuzzy old lady sort of junk. Your sketching is beautiful!! You should add 'inspire someone else' to your to do list so you can tick it off!!

  21. My comment was going to be about how much I love the cool term you invented. The bird is pretty gorgeous too.

  22. I learned how to do it by looking it up in my sewing machine manual. Maybe you could be cheeky and just tell people to read up on it for themselves! :-D

  25. It really does look lovely, Gina. I'm inspired. I've ventured as far as a few extra wiggly lines around the birds on the onesises I'm making... I had a bad run in with a uni lecturer in the olden days that who me thread sketching was a tad crafty for his liking (crafty was a bad thing back then). Have you seen Tara Badcock's work? She's a local thread sketcher and a pretty good one at that. http://teacosyrevolutiontara.blogspot.com/

  27. You're so right. My quilting teacher told us that everyone can quilt, but the people who won't be able to quilt are the ones who convince themselves they can't.

Sometimes you've just gotta put your head down, tail up and give it a red hot go!!

  28. that looks amazing. you are very talented to give such accurate form to a picture. i love it

    ReplyDelete
  29. whatever you decide to call it, it looks beautiful! It's like a delicate sketch but with stitches and not a pencil. I'd love to have a go, look forward to the shove!!....wish I could just pop over and see the quilt project too!!! you'll have to take loadsa snaps for me! :)

  30. I want a little birdie like yours!

Nikki gave me a push and ashove in the direction of jumper refashioning, so why not 'free motion stitching' or whatever you called it. I just want to be able to do it.
