I might like it.

Might, I said. Don't hold me to it.

I think the best description I have for how this quilt is starting to look is... compelling. The sort of thing you are drawn to, the sort of thing you want to look at.

But of course many ugly, horrible things compel us to stare at them - like car wrecks, and hairy warts on peoples' faces.

(And looking at that segment above, all I can think is WOW, there are some bad fabric designs around. You should see the ones that didn't make the cut!).

I think perhaps this kind of clashery should really be reserved in the future for a 1" hexagon quilt or smaller. As my hexagon-mad friend Anne recently said to me, 'if you think a fabric is ugly you're just not cutting it small enough'. There is wisdom to be had from Anne (not to mention lovely hexagonal eye-candy on her craft blog). I guess the smaller the pieces, the more blending you can do, the more the eye can be drawn elsewhere. With this large hexagon, any individual ugliness is exhibited in all its glory.

Nonetheless. I might like it.

  1. I love the different fabrics. (I believe the following can apply to more than just fabric)One of those fabrics on their own may not be the prettiest, but put it together with something else and it can transform into something beautiful!

    I like it!!

  2. I DO like it.

I have a magnificently clashy vintage quilt which has, over the years sun faded to the most glorious creation & I mean like - ever. Maybe hanging yours over the balcony for a couple of summers will achieve the same look.

It's going to be gorgeous Gina.

  4. I think it's completely magnificent. The garish clashing colours are just fabulous (and I don't know what some fabric designers are thinking either...seriously?). I'm just imagining it flung over the back of the couch...lovely.

  6. I think you will like it - in fact I think you'll like it a lot. I think it will look great and over the years it will become a much loved and cherished part of your family life - there may even be a fight over it some day as to who gets it!! x

  7. It's coming together really well. Don't forget you're seeing it up close all the time - we see the whole and it looks great! Nic

  8. Anne might be on to something because dang woman, that looks superb! How the heck do you go about sewing them all together?

(p.s I still haven't sent my scraps to you ... do you still want/need them?)

  10. Ummm... Screw might like it, I DO love it! Looking fan-frikkin-tastic, it is!

You're right though, some fabrics, well... the less said about them the better, but put together like that, well, it's the best fate they could have hoped for, quite honestly, and I am loving, LOVING 'clashery'.

    My new favourite word.

    Just sayin.

  11. Is it bad if I think I like it too?

I think I have to make one...

  12. You know I am making hex's so I showed Carlos your proje t and he said... "thank god you have nicer fabric" lmao... I like your fabric but Anne is right. If it's a little ugly you just have to make it smaller. The daisy are the only fabric scarying me really. Otherwise I think it is freaking awesome... Just like you. My small hex's have been used to patch a pair of op shop jeans for Bubble... CN't wait to share the finished product...

  13. It's one of those things that every time you look at it, you see something different. That is a good thing.

  14. That looks fantastic!!! The beautiful fabrics manage to camouflage the not so beautiful and it just works. It works really really well! Can't wait to see more.

  15. Step back a bit and you might appreciate it more. Or just mail it to my house.
I can't believe all the work you've put into all those hexagons - this is fantastic.

And you had me at "clashery"! So perfect.

  16. i hope you do, especially seeing as that looks like a really big huge considerable amount of effort to make!. Although I totally understand what you mean, especially if you are more of an anally obsessed pattern person like I am. I am currently having my first experience of making a scarf with variagated wool, and I'm a bit unsure of what I think so far. There's just no pattern or solidity! eek! but I shall persist and see what I actually think at the end (although my project is way way x 1000 smaller than yours!)

  19. Soon the pride of knowing that you made it all yourself will outweigh whatever you think of it. Not that I've ever made a quilt, but I would say it's all about placement and you've done a fantastic job of that!!

  20. Looking good!

The small size thing is the same a the photo mosaic posters. When you look close, there are real pictures, when you zoom out and the photos are indistinguishable, all you see is value- light, medium, dark- just the big picture.

  21. Great blend of colours and the hexagonal shapes add that extra magic touch. Look forward to seeing it when it's all sewn up.

  24. hmm I love it, the ugly fabrics give it character, too matching is boring.

  25. I love random one-patch quilts , squares or hexagons !
Once this one is larger , all the different fabrics will blend enough so soften the edges but still glow .
It's going to look gorgeous !

  26. No might about it, Gina. Fab!

  27. Looks awesome Gina! I agree with the comments above -- that looks to me like a quilt that's going to be fought over in years to come.

Also, thanks for the props :) I have some new ones to show after a holiday -- must get them blogged!

  28. It's gorgeous Gina! I must confess, I just don't
'get' the hexagon thing, but I love the result - I'm pretty sure I don't have the patience for it.
LOVE the comment about the ugly fabric, priceless!
