Reluctant homage to the granny square.

All the cool kids can crochet. But me, well, I'm just not that into it. Personally I find hexagon paper-piecing  just as portable, meditative, satisfying, life-changing etc etc as all that tying-knots-in-yarn business that everyone is on about. Plus it helps you lose weight.* Yeah, cop that, crochet-lover!

Meanwhile, just to prove that I am not at all bitter-and-twisted about my apparent inability to do anything with hook-and-yarn, and just to assure you that any sarcastic comments I've made about crochet on other blogs are really only light-hearted, I would like to point out that I'm quite pro-granny. So much so that I've been wearing THIS around my neck almost daily for months:

Of course, I didn't make the granny square. But I DID turn it en pointe and hang it on a neck band. Astonishing! Do you need a tutorial?

*Downright lie.

  1. OK. You are SO going to hit me. Please know that this is in no way an attempt to quash any eensy teensy smidge of granny love you may have cultivated. Please know, that I know, that you couldn't give a flying patootie (whatever that is) for what I have to say next...

The granny square is back to front.

  2. I too cannot put my quilting down long enough to crochet, but I do so admire those who do use the hook and yarn.

Clever use of the granny square to create a charming accessory!

  3. Hahaha Tania. I'll catch you when she hits you some continents far, ok? :-D

Gina, ofcourse we need a tutorial. You understand that, don't you? And it absolutely looks cute!

(PS. I still can't crochet one bit either. I don't even own a crochet hook. Maybe that has something to do with it?)

  4. As one non-crochet girl to another, I can assure you that the granny is totally cool - and always looks better back-to-front. (I was admiring some that Lara had made, and I said "I like this side best". Lara's response was similar to Tania's).

  7. ahem... as a crochet lover yet one who has resisted the urge to ever hook a G. Square due to fear of it over taking my life- plus the fact that i know I will make all those squares and not want to hook them all together... i appreciate whole heartedly this lovely peice of jewellery- it seems great minds think alike have you seen this: http://earlandcookie.blogspot.com/2010/06/granny-goodness-available-in-shop.html

  9. Ok ... first I have to giggle at Tania's comment.
And then I have to admit that I would never have known it was back to front either.
If I learn to crochet .... that's another craft I have to obsess about and a new stash that I have no room for.
I'm with you and your hexies!!

  10. I like the way you wear the granny square, as a choker. I like using them as patches on jeans or stain covers. This is new and I might make myself one. Thanks for sharing.

  15. I LOVE IT! Is it one of Ross' aunt's? I will tell him. Also, I might get Beth (who has taken to the whole knotting thing and has made my girls two gorgeous blankets) to make me one. Because I do not have the time, patience or inclination. But I DO have the love.

I also love the big smile that hangs above the granny square. :)
